Academic Writing Task 1

쓰기 전략

Imagine that you had to describe the information to someone who can’t see it !

How much information do you need to provide to give them a clear enough ‘picture’ of what is in front of you ?
Answer: About the same amount as you have been asked to write

Do the following:

Describe the data clearly and correctly / Make it clear what period of time ( if any ) you are explaining. In particular: all past information / from past to present / looking into the future / time not relevant to the information   …so you know what tense to use

Do not do the following:

Provide an objective overview  / Use the format of a continuous piece of writing

•using numbers wrongly - trends vs set points
•not using any data from the diagrams to support point
•tenses - wrong time - past, present, future
•not including an introductory and concluding sentence

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The graph below shows the incidence of disease in Someland between 1960 and 1995.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information in the diagram.
Write at least 150 words

A candidate’s answer (low score)

This graph gives you information about Someland. The disease began in 1960 when the number of people who suffered from it was about 100. The disease stayed flat for one or two years and then went up a little bit. The disease in 1970 had a rate of 200. Then there was a big climb which shows that many more people caught the disease, over about a five year period, before the disease flattened itself out. It stayed about the same for about five years. Then it went down a lot until 1990. In 1995, nobody had the disease and it has disappeared from Someland probably because of improved medicine. I think this is a very good thing.
