A few things to note about the ‘Lexical Resource criteria:

This refers to how much vocabulary you know and how you use it.

The examiner will be looking for a wide range of vocabulary so try not to repeat words too much. Instead, use synonyms, explanations or another strategy if possible.

The examiner will also be looking for whether you know a lot of words connected with a certain topic. So, for example, when you note your ideas on the scrap paper to answer Part 2 (the interview), if you have time you could also write down some impressive vocabulary to use.

Remember, the examiner is looking for a range of language, so even if you are not 100% sure if a word is appropriate, it is a good idea to use it, especially if you avoid repeating another word or expression. Generally, risk-taking in the IELTS test is rewarded, not penalised. If you stick to very simple language because you do not want to make any mistakes, your score will be limited.
