IELTS Tips – Speaking – Rating – Fluency & Coherence

Have you seen the criteria used for rating the interview? A public version is available at:

A few things to note about the ‘Fluency and Coherence’ criteria:

● This refers to how fast/ smoothly you speak; you should try to speak at a normal speed.

● We all hesitate when we speak, especially when answering quite difficult questions. If you take a second or two to consider your answer before speaking, you are unlikely to lose as many marks as if you hesitate in the middle of an answer.

● However, if you hesitate a lot while you speak trying to remember or think of words, this will affect your score. So it’s a good idea to consider your answer briefly first.

● Lower-level speakers tend to repeat the same ideas or language – try not to.

● It also measures how easy it is to understand your answers, both in terms of logic and language e.g. cohesive devices that connect your responses together, such as ‘in general’, ‘personally’, ‘generally’ etc. Try not to use the same one too much e.g. ‘actually’!

● It might be a good idea to record yourself and listen to check how you sound in terms of speech rate/hesitation and if you use the same cohesive words too much.

Good Luck~!!
