IELTS Tips – Reading (4) – Text Types
The passages used in the test are based on authentic texts, and are taken from sources such as magazines, journals, books and newspapers.
Some candidates are surprised by the length of the texts in the Academic Module. Make sure you are used to reading such long, academic/formal articles quickly.
Do not rely on IELTS preparation materials alone, but use real newspapers, magazines and text books too.
The General Module uses more, up to 6, texts but they are shorter and of a more general nature.
Texts for the first Section are taken from notices, advertisements, timetables, publicity material and similar sources. Texts for the second Section are taken from company handbooks, contracts, workplace notices, office memos, guidelines for employees and similar sources. Texts for the third Section are taken from newspapers, magazines or journal articles, fictional or non-fictional book extracts and similar sources.
However, the question types for both modules are similar (x 11 for the General Module and x 10 for the Academic Module) – have you practised all of them?!
Good luck!
