[IELTS] 미국대학 소개1- Harvard University

앞으로 미국의 아이비리그 대학교를 시작으로, 미국 대학 소개 시리즈가 시작될 예정입니다.

그 첫 번째로, 오늘은 미국의 가장 유명한 대학교 하면 생각나는 ‘하버드 대학교’에 대해 소개해 드릴게요.

하버드 대학교는 메사추세츠 식민지 최고법령에 의해 1636년 창립되었으며, 당시 하버드 대학교 창립에 큰 영향을 끼친 ‘존 하버드’ 목사의 이름에서 학교의 이름을 따 왔다고 해요. 창립 초기에 하버드 대학교에서는 영국 대학교의 모델을 따라 학생들을 교육했고, 뉴 잉글랜드 지방의 수많은 청교도 목사를 배출했어요. 그러나 하버드 대학교는 청교도 목사 배출 혹은 어느 특정 종교에 국한되는 교육을 한 것은 아니었고, 점차 종합대학으로 발전하면서, 교육의 영역이 점점 더 넓어지게 되었고 현재의 위치에 이르게 되었답니다.

하버드 대학교는 10개의 주요 Academic Unit으로 이루어져 있으며, 졸업생 중에는 존 F 케네디 대통령 등 5명의 대통령이 있으며 록펠러 재단의 데이비드 록펠러, 정치인 랄프 레이더, 헬렌 켈러 등 수많은 유명 인사들이 하버드 대학교 출신으로 밝혀져 있습니다.

2008년 가을 학기를 기준으로 학부, 대학원생을 모두 포함하여 20,222명이 등록 되어 있으며, 학부생의 17%정도와 대학원생의 10% 정도가 아시안 계 학생인 것으로 통계 자료가 발표되어 있어요.

The History of Harvard University
 

Harvard College was established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was named for its first benefactor, John Harvard of Charlestown, a young minister who, upon his death in 1638, left his library and half his estate to the new institution. Harvard's first scholarship fund was created in 1643 with a gift from Ann Radcliffe, Lady Mowlson.

During its early years, the College offered a classic academic course based on the English university model but consistent with the prevailing Puritan philosophy of the first colonists. Although many of its early graduates became ministers in Puritan congregations throughout New England, the College was never formally affiliated with a specific religious denomination. An early brochure, published in 1643, justified the College's existence: "To advance Learning and perpetuate it to Posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate Ministry to the Churches."

Harvard's 10 principal academic units

The expression "every tub on its own bottom" is often used to describe the decentralized organization and financial arrangement of Harvard's principal academic units: nine faculties overseeing Harvard's 12 schools and colleges and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Each unit is headed by a Dean, who is appointed by the President, and each is directly responsible for its own finances and organization. The University administration supports the activities of the academic units and other operations on a University-wide basis.

     Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
     Division of Continuing Education
2) Business School
3) Design School
4) Divinity School
5) Graduate School of Education
6) John F. Kennedy School of Government 7) Law School
8) Faculty of Medicine includes:
     Medical School
     School of Dental Medicine
9) School of Public Health
10) Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study
