The most common problem in the Writing Section is that test takers do not answer the question:
● In the General Module Task 1 – Make sure you read and write about the 3 points that are given in the boxed instructions in your letter. If you want a good score, you need to add your own details, too – use your imagination!
● In the Academic Module Task 1 – You need to describe the information that you can see in the chart/ table / diagram etc. You should not interpret the information i.e. say why this is so. Imagine that your partner cannot see the information – try to summarise it as well as you can, including the main points and most important numbers, details etc. in 150-200 words.
● In the General/ Academic Module Task 2 – Read the question carefully and highlight what you need to do. Sometimes there will be only one thing you need to do e.g. ‘To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?’ In this case, it is important to state very clearly if you agree, disagree or both and give lots of reasons supporting your position. Sometimes there will be 2, even 3 parts to the question e.g. ‘Discuss both these points of view and give your own opinion.’ In these cases, the most obvious approach would be to devote one paragraph to each of the 3 points equally.
● In the General/ Academic Module Task 2 – A lot of test takers write an advantages v disadvantages essay every time. That’s fine if the task asks for this, but in many cases, a different approach is required (see the point above). So, read the question carefully and identify what kind of essay that is required.
● Respond to the question and do not rely on an answer you have memorised – it is very unlikely to match the expected response.
Good luck!
