[IELTS] Basket-case Britain

세계적으로 경제 불황에 시달리고 있는 요즘 
예외랄 것 없이 영국도 높은 실업률에,
mortgage를 갚지 못해 집을 잃는 사람들도 늘어가고 있다고 하니..
각종 매체들에선 IMF가 올 것이라는 우려의 목소리가 높아만 가고,
자국민을 보호하기 위해 이런 저런 조치에 나서는 걸 보면 정말 힘들긴 한가 봅니다.
이런 영국을 빗대어 Guardian지에서는 “Basket-case Britain” 이라는 표현을 썼네요.

Basket-case: a country or an organisation whose economic situation is very bad

*Downturn in the economy (경기 불황) has affected us all. More and more people are defaulting on their mortgages (융자, 대부금을 갚지 못하다) in this recession (불경기) which means that the banks are repossessing more and more homes. 

이 기회에 제대로 알고 넘어가자!

IMF
Short for the International Monetary Fund, a part of the United Nations which encourages international trade and gives financial help to poor countries or countries in temporarily difficult economic situations

WTO
Short for World Trade Organisation, an international organisation that controls trade between countries

Protectionism
the actions of a country to help its trade or industry by taxing goods bought from other countries

Global economic crisis
serious, negative financial situation which affects a lot of countries around the world

 Mortgage
an agreement between you and a bank which allows you to borrow money to buy a house or flat. Most people repay the amount (along with interest) monthly over 20 or 25 years

Downturn
a reduction in the economy or business activities
The economic downturn has meant that factories are producing less and as a result are making more and more of their staff redundant.

어느 곳이랄 것도 없이 세계적으로 경기가 나쁘다니 너무 낙심하지 마시고 이 고비가 얼른 지나가기를, 또 이렇게 말해 볼 수 있는 순간도 오기를 기대해 보며

I'm fairly flush this month, want me to lend you some cash?
나 이번 달 좀 풍족한데/여유로운데, 돈 좀 빌려 줄까?

*Flush: (돈을) 잔뜩 가진, 아낌없이 쓰는, 손이 큰

He is too flush with his money. 그 사람은 손이 커/ 돈을 너무 잘 써.
