IELTS Tips - Speaking

During the second part of the test, you have to speak for 1-2 minutes on a topic which the examiner gives to you. For example:

Describe a teacher who has greatly influenced you during your education.

  You should say:

            where you met them

            what subject they taught

            what was special about them

and explain why this person influenced you so much.

You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes.

You have one minute to think about what you are going to say.

You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Some key points here are:

Try to use your one-minute preparation time well (see below)
Try to speak for 2 minutes (practise on your own or with a friend)
Speak at a normal speed throughout (many students try to speak too fast)

Tip!  Use your one-minute preparation time to think of a second, related subject to talk about. So, for example, your notes might look this:

  An influential teacher:
  Mrs. Smith

  Geography teacher

  High-school

Took time outside of class to help students

A teacher who didn’t really influence me:

  Mr. Jones

  High-school

  Obviously didn’t like the kids

Just used the textbook – never prepared anything special

Always cam late and left early

You can use your notes as a plan for your talk, expanding upon each point. You could also talk about another influential teacher – there’s always one or two obvious way of extending your ideas. So, use your one minute to prepare the content, rather than the exact language you are going to use.
